Republic of the Union of Myanmar Yangon–Mandalay Railway Improvement Project Award for Procurement of Diesel Electric Multiple Unit

Niigata Transys Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “NTS”), one of the group companies of IHI Corporation, and Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”) have been chosen by Myanmar Railways to procure 24 cars of Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (hereinafter, “DEMU”)* for the “Yangon-Mandalay Improvement Project Phase I” (the procurement of these cars will hereinafter be referred to as, “The Project”). The contract for The Project, which is valued at approximately 7 billion Japanese Yen, was signed by Marubeni, NTS and Myanmar Railways on February 9, 2018. Marubeni, as consortium leader, will be in charge of overall commercial issues while NTS will be responsible for such aspects as design, manufacturing, testing and training as those things pertain to DEMU.

The Project is one part of the “Yangon-Mandalay Improvement Project Phase I” (a project to improve and modernize the aged systems on the existing railway line between Yangon and Mandalay) which has thus far been financed by an international Yen loan of 45 billion Japanese Yen via the Japanese Government. Moreover, the first exportation of Japanese made products for the “Yangon-Mandalay Improvement Project Phase I” will fall under the scope of The Project.

The 24 DEMU cars which will be procured as part of The Project will depart from Yangon, the biggest commercial city in Myanmar, and run through the capital city of Naypyidaw, to Taungoo in the middle of Yangon where Mandalay, the 2nd biggest commercial city in Myanmar, is located. The distance between Yangon and Taungoo is approximately 267km, and currently takes about 7 hours to traverse. However, The Project will drastically shorten this traveling time to around 3 hours and 20 minutes. The Project is to mitigate traffic problems and contribute to Myanmar’s socioeconomic development by relieving the stress taken on by the people of Myanmar as a result of the current transportation system.

As a leading manufacturer of diesel trains in Japan, NTS has vast experience in making trains like the DEMU that will be used in The Project; manufacturing Light Rail Transit Vehicles and snowplows in Japan and overseas. Moreover, NTS has impressive records of achievement in Asia by providing new transit systems which is known as Automated People Mover. NTS continues to seek out business opportunities in Asia, including in Myanmar, and continue to contribute to the economic growth of all countries through transportation and infrastructure projects.
